It is well known to most that Breckenridge was a gold rush town, settled in 1859 after gold was discovered in the Blue River. Evidence of the past is still apparent, as you can find mining shacks on the slopes, and the remnants of an original miners cabin every once in a while tucked away on the back streets of town. You can stroll along the perfectly landscaped pathways along the Blue River still today.
The gold rush came and went; the powder rush has long been in full swing and as a result, buying a home has not been for the meek wallet. Breckenridge luxury real estate is more of a phenomenon than just a housing market. Some of the estates available in the area are staggering works of fine mountain architecture, from the timber hewn mansions to the Breckenridge ranches whose casual finery and craftsmanship can truly leave one speechless. Breckenridge is now a world class destination spot, not just for families wanting a second home, but for retirees as well.
They say that if you need to ask the price, you can't afford it, but we found out that this isn't always the case with Breckenridge. It has been oft remarked that the total value of Summit County real estate transactions in a single year exceeds the GNP of several eastern European countries. However, buying into Summit County real estate doesn't always include a seven figure price tag; there actually is relatively affordable Colorado real estate in existence. Try looking into mountain condos or town homes as your first purchase in the area. This can be a great way to get the location you want (sometimes right in the middle of town) at a price you can afford. Say you are in love with the fabulous night skiing at Keystone Resort but can't yet fit one of those gorgeous mountain ranches into your budget. Patience will overcome; just keep in mind that even the simplest of mountain condos are a bona fide Summit County investment property. Trading up is not a new concept; one of those stately Breckenridge mansions could only be a few years away, with the help of a good local realtor and a steady source for coffee.
